Interesting Facts:

  •    Chopsticks are estimated to have existed for between 3,000 and 5,000 years. They are said to have originated in China, and Chinese philosopher Confucius is said to have had a major role in their development. His emphasis on nonviolent teachings led to the prohibition of eating tools associated with war, like as knives, from being present at the dinner table.
  • National Chopstick Day is February 6th; who knew chopsticks were so popular that they deserved their own holiday? Make a note of it on your calendar!
  • The Chinese alone are said to consume approximately 45 billion disposable chopsticks each year, while the Japanese use roughly 25 million, or around 200 pairs per person per year! As a result, the People’s Republic of China imposed a 5% levy on disposable chopsticks in an effort to cut down on natural resource waste.
  • The increase in popularity of Japanese, Chinese and other oriental dishes has meant that today, around a third of the world uses a chopstick every day, which is nearly as many people as use a traditional knife and fork!
  • There are persons who have a dread of chopsticks (for reasons we don’t understand), and this is known as “consecotaleophobia.”
  • Chopsticks are typically constructed of wood or plastic, however this is no longer the case. These are used to evaluate the toxicity of foods, and are primarily for the use of China’s Royal Family.
  • Chopsticks are known by several names in different languages. For example, they are known as ‘zhu’ in Ancient Chinese, ‘kuaizi’ in modern Chinese, and ‘hashi’ in Japanese.
  • Chopsticks are divided into four categories. The Chinese prefer a longer chopstick with a round or blunt end; the Japanese choose shorter, pointier wooden alternatives; and the Koreans prefer shorter, blunt metal, plastic, or wood chopsticks. Finally, the Vietnamese utilize longer sticks, which are usually constructed of wood or plastic. The lengths are generally between 18cm and 40cm.
  • More than 30 joints and 50 muscles in the fingers, wrist, arm, and shoulder, as well as thousands of nerves, are involved in using chopsticks.
  • Almost one third of the world uses chopsticks every day, about as many as use a knife and fork.
